As a student, you have a lot on your plate. From classes and homework to extracurricular activities and social obligations, it can be tough to stay on top of everything. That’s why it’s so important to get organized.

Creating a plan for what you need to do and when you need to do it will help you stay ahead of the curve – literally. Here are eight good habits for students that will help you get (and stay) organized:

1. Make a list of what needs to be done. This may seem like an obvious first step, but it’s important nonetheless. By sitting down and making a list of everything that needs to be done, you can get a better sense of what’s actually involved in completing all of your tasks. Plus, seeing everything written out in front of you can help prevent overwhelm from setting in.

2. Break down big projects into smaller tasks. Once you have your list of things that need to be done, take a closer look at each item on the list. If there are any large projects or assignments included, break them down into smaller tasks that can be completed over time. This will make the entire process seem less daunting and more manageable.

Don’t multitask

Whenever possible, resist the urge to multitask. Although it may seem like a good way to get more done in less time, research has shown that multitasking can actually make you less productive. When you try to do two things at once, your brain has to switch back and forth between the tasks, which can lead to mistakes and decreased efficiency.

If you need to get something done, focus on that task and give it your full attention. You’ll be surprised at how much quicker and better you’ll be able to do it.


Most teenagers need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. But many teens do not get enough sleep. They may stay up late doing homework or talking with friends. Or they may have early morning activities such as sports practice or a part-time job.

Teens often have trouble sleeping because their bodies are going through changes that make it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. The most important thing you can do is to keep a regular sleep schedule as much as possible. That means going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time each morning, including on weekends.

A regular sleep schedule will help your body get used to a set bedtime and wake-up time, making it easier for you to fall asleep and wake up feeling rested.

Set a schedule

Take notes

In addition to taking regular notes in class, another good habit for students is to create a study guide for each course. A study guide can be a simple list of key topics covered in the course, or it can be more detailed and include specific information about each topic. Reviewing your study guide before exams will help you refresh your memory and better prepare for the test.

Another good habit for students is to set aside time each day for studying. Even if you only have 30 minutes available, carving out time each day to review your notes and work on assignments will make a big difference in your grades over the course of a semester. If possible, try studying at the same time each day so that it becomes part of your daily routine. And don’t forget to take breaks! Studying for long periods of time without taking any breaks can actually lead to lower grades because you’ll likely become overwhelmed and frustrated. Taking five-minute breaks every 20 minutes or so will help keep you focused and fresh during long study sessions.

Seeing these things every day will help keep you focused on why you’re working hard in the first place.
