It doesn’t have to be anything big or time-consuming, but forcing yourself to focus on something else for a short period of time can help take your mind off of whatever is bothering you. For example, if you’re stuck thinking about a fight with your friend, try rearranging your bookshelf or cleaning out your closet for 10 minutes. Or if you can’t stop thinking about that bad grade on your test, call up a friend and chat for 10 minutes or play your favorite video game for 10 minutes. Doing something else will help take the focus off of what’s bothering you and give you a chance to relax and clear your head.

Another thing that might help is talking to someone about what’s going on. It can be really helpful to talk through whatever is bothering you with someone who will understand and offer some helpful advice. Sometimes just getting everything off of your chest can make it feel like less of a big deal than it did before. So if possible, reach out to a trusted friend or family member and tell them what’s going on- I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to listen (and maybe even offer some sage wisdom).

Do some research on the area and make a list of things that interest YOU – not just things that everyone else says are “must-sees”. Then start planning how YOU’RE going spend YOUR vacation!
